How to: Dress for a Baby Shower When You're Not Pregnant

Getting dressed for things like baby showers, wedding showers or even just an evening coffee can be a little intimidating. You want to be modest, but stylish. You want to be appropriate and not under dressed.... but it's different than getting ready for an evening with the girls or date night. I've found that sticking to classic shapes is the way to go for these sorts of occasions. Today, one of my best friends had her first baby shower! It was a light brunch and held at a house that had an indoor/outdoor setting.

This skirt is actually a dress - worn last here - but for today, I thought it would be perfect to layer underneath a crew neck shirt and pair with two-toned loafers (also, last seen here). I kept the color scheme pretty simple - black, white and a bold shade of pink. The coat is a perfect compliment for the simple black and white, but since it was a girl baby shower, it added a little fun to the outfit.

I've been thinking more and more about hair and makeup when I'm putting outfits together. Whether it's a bohemian look with a halo braid (like this) or soft glamorous curls (like here), an outfit is complimented by hair accessories. For this outfit, a bow was perfect. Sometimes, a simple bun is the way to go. I love how easy this was to do, and cost next to nothing since I had the ribbon on hand from many previous craft projects.

Converting dresses to a skirt is so easy to do. You can easily layer a crewneck, button up or even a pullover vneck. It's a perfect way to get more usage out of your closet. I also love the way the shoes are a great balance to the feminine bows on my purse and in my hair. At a shower you are oftentimes on the move so it's nice to be comfortable and wear something that allows you to stand for longer periods of time. I found that when I'm comfortable, I have a better time.
