This upcoming Memorial Day weekend I have plans to go visit friends from college by floating the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, Texas. I figured it would be a perfect time to share a few places that are excellent spots for the holiday weekend (or any part of Summer really). Most that are on this list are in the Texas Hill Country and surrounding areas which is the most central you can get from most large cities.
Camp on Lake Travis at Pace Bend
Camping at Pace Bend is the perfect getaway if you are looking to relax and be in a secluded area. The park is a private property and sits right on Lake Travis. You can climb down into the water and float, swim, or just. Depending on the water level, you may hike down the area a little more. I'd also recommend on your way there or leaving to head over to Austin, TX for drinks and dinner at Guerro's which is a longtime favorite (going on a decade) for myself! On your way out of town hit up a good hike like Mt. Bonnell or McKinney Falls!
Float the River in New Braunfels or San Marcos
This is actually where I'm headed this year. If you remember back, I visited San Marcos to stay with a friend. It's a sweet little city with a great downtown. You can check it out here if you want recommendations. This year I'll be camping on the Guadalupe River and spending most of the weekend floating the river. Make sure you bring Bull Frog sunscreen. It's the best stuff when you are going to be in the sun all day. I used to use it in High School and College while life guarding.
Visit the Caverns in Boerne
Almost two years ago my sister and I took a trip to Boerne, TX. You can read more about it in this, this and this post. It's a charming place with delicious restaurants, cafes, and shops. One of the best parts of the trip was that we visited Cascade Caverns. I would call and check ahead to see when they are giving tours. They use a tour guide and it's about a 45 minute hike down and back. Be prepared for a lot of stairs! Afterwards, head over to their downtown and visit the Cibolo Creek Brewery or have lunch at 259 Brantely's Bistro. For dinner, I highly recommend Cypress Grill. They have a fantastic atmosphere and the best food!
Swim in the Lagoon at Krause Springs
Krause Springs is a short drive from Marble Falls and is a private lagoon and camping site where you can feel like you are instantly transported to another place. You can rope swing, swim, and even jump off a cliff into the cool water. If you aren't into camping, head over to Marble Falls for lunch at the Bluebonnet Cafe and a hotel to stay in. The town is small but quaint and has several restaurants you can eat where it overlooks to the beautiful river below.
Eat Ice Cream at the Apple Store by the Cowboy Capital
Bandera, TX (aka the Cowboy Capital) is situated on the Old Spanish Trail and has incredible state parks surrounding where you can go horseback riding, hiking or drive through scenic areas. Have a bite to eat at OST which has a John Wayne room then head out west to Medina, TX where you can eat the most delicious apple ice cream at the Apple Store. You can also float or swim at the Medina, River!
