5 on Fridays: Five Ways Working From Home Changed My Life

For years I spent hours driving in and out of the city to get to and from my job only to find that I ended up coming home at the end of the day with very little energy left to give to my family. After nearly a decade and working in the technology industry and leading outside sales teams to success I ended up making several life changes due to an onset of panic attacks. I knew something had to change but I was unwilling to stop working. I’ve always been one of those people that had been left to work and the thought of not having a way to work because of the amount of anxiety that I was undergoing sent me into even more panic. For a while there I felt like I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. It was like I couldn’t keep going and doing what I was doing and maintain sanity but the thought of leaving that atmosphere that I had become so accustomed to was also equally terrifying.

And that’s when it hit me why don’t I start working from home? Today I’m going to share with you five reasons why I decided to make the move from working for another company to working for myself and being able to manage my family life, personal life and business life all from my home.

Balance

One of the biggest struggles I think any mom undergoes is being able to balance family and work. As moms, weare expected to do so much. We are expected to make sure everyone’s on time to school and all of the extracurricular activities. We are expected to keep the house tidy and dinner put on the table. We’re expected to always have the emotional stability when the rest of the family is undergoing meltdowns. And now there’s a new layer in these past few decades where we are now expected to bring in income as well. All of that and mounting pressure can create a lack of balance in our lives and when we don’t have balance we really struggle with being able to juggle all of those balls. I know this better than anybody else. I lived that life for almost 10 years. One of the biggest things that working from home allowed me to do is have more time to balance my personal development, exercise, managing my household, and being able to contribute to the family financially.

Clarity

Going into business for yourself can seem intimidating, but once you align your purpose with your work life suddenly work become so much more clear. There was a period of transition between corporate life and work from home life that I underwent and once I came out of that adjustment phase and really got into a routine of working from home I realize she’s so much better. I was able to start my day with personal development an exercise instead of rushing to get everybody ready to go to school and rushing to get myself off to work on Time. When we have fewer things to have to think about, we gain a much better sense of clarity and mental capacity to tackle things. Being able to work from home allows me to have a shorter to do list and a lot more clarity. I begin my day by writing 3 to 5 objectives and I’m going to do for my business and I work throughout the day two to cross all of them off. It takes just a plan yet and it also takes perseverance but at the end of the day I now when I lay my head on my pillow at night that I spent my time wisely throughout the day to for fill my God-given purpose. You see, being able to work for yourself allows you to make the rules. There are still many things that are true or for me to do every day both and personal and in my work life but I understand the purpose of them instead of having to just cross off things that are on a corporation’s checklist.

Vision

When I was working for other companies I spent most of my day focused on their strategy and their vision. Sometimes their vision aligned with my own values many times they did not. A huge advantage of working from home and for yourself is that you create your vision. You get to create your strategy. And you get to for fill your purpose. All of those things not only allowed me to be a better mother, partner, friend and daughter but also have allowed me to create a vision that inspires and uplifts others.

Time

I think one of the biggest benefits I’ve seen since I made this transition over a year and a half ago is being able to do the things that I need to do instead of sitting in traffic to and from my job every morning. I gained at least two hours a day every day for five days a week by being able to work from my home if you think about that that’s 10 hours a week that you’re spending if your commute is only an hour and for many of us that commute is much longer. On top of the 10 hours I’ve saved from just driving to and from work I’ve gained another 10 hours a week in getting myself ready to go to work or coming home and having to decompress from work. Can you imagine gaining 20 hours a week every week in your life to be able to invest that time into other areas?

Courage

When I graduated college, during every interview I was asked why I wanted to enter into the sales industry. I’ve answered that question hundreds of times at this point whether it was for a job interview, interviewing somebody to bring onto my team, or just in casual business conversation. My answer is always remain the same, I want to run a company one day. When I first started saying that out loud I knew it was my passion to lead, motivate, and inspire other people to live their life to the fullest. I had no idea that 11 years ago when I was approached with this question that my answer was actually going to be calling forth my future circumstances. At the time running an online business was not quite as popular as it is today. If you asked me when I graduated college what I was going to do with my life never in 1 million years would I have imagined being a blogger and selling make up and skincare products. Now thanks to the booming of social media and the rapid rate in which technology has advanced I am able not only work from my home but also be able to reach out to women all over the world and share my values and my vision to help inspire them. If you’re currently stuck in a job that doesn’t align with who you are or who you want to be do you have the power to change it. Yes it’s scary to work for yourself. Yes it’s going to require doing things that you don’t always want to do so that you can do the things that you want to do later. It’s going to require peaks and valleys and it’s also going to require for you to motivate yourself. But just as anything else in life is, you get out what you put into it.

If you are looking to make a change, you don’t have to do it alone! You have the power to be and do anything you put your energy towards. It takes a leap of faith. It takes doing the things that others may not have the willpower to accomplish, but it’s so much better to work with a purpose than work for a paycheck.

So often a work bag is a necessary staple for everyday life. If it’s not a work bag then maybe it’s a tote or diaper bag we are carrying around daily. I recently received this vibrant purple satchel when I made the decision to partner with YOUNIQUE. You can get your own kit here if you would like your own bag filled with goodies (only $79 and comes with 7 makeup products and tools all full size). I had no idea until I started using it daily to tote around samples, an ipad, makeup, a notebook and various other necessities just how much I would fall in love with this beautiful color.

Now that I’m in the process of a cross country move, I’vie been really conscious about purchasing new wardrobe items so making do with what I already owned was a welcomed challenge. Purple is a color in my closet with a much smaller presence. I quickly realized it would be a good idea to find a few similar items items to pair it with so I could use it as a conversation starter and carry daily. Today’s post gives you three looks to wear a statement bag - a casual, business appropriate and dressy.

Look 1 - Casual

Taking notes from Audrey Hepburn’s classic style, wear simple black form fitting leggings and a tank with black ballet flats to mimic this look. To incorporate an acccent color like deep purple add a pair of statement earrings for just the right amount of pop. Almost everyone I know has a pair of black leggings, a black tank and black flats. I prefer to wear a pair of leggings with a control top waist band and opaque material. This pair from DKNY are high quality and keep their shape all day. This look will make you appear slimmer while being comfortable enough to wear all day.

Look 2 - Business

The second look is perfect for a business meeting, luncheon, bridal or baby shower, church service or daytime event. You can’t go wrong pairing your presenter bag with a versatile little white dress. When you buy a classic piece look for quality construction (lining, zippers, finishing), a great fit and beautiful fabric. I’ve worn this Gal Meets Glam dress countless times (see this post and this post) because it fits impeccably and has movement when I walk. It is easily worn with flats or heels to dress up or down depending on where I’m headed for the day. Its conservative neckline and classic cut makes it great for work! I added the same pair of purple earrings and open toed platform pumps in a beautiful purple iridescent finish.

Look 3 - Dressy

I believe every gal needs a statement dress. I’ve had this one for about 13 years (yes, I tend to hold on to things I love for a long time). I’ve dressed it down with bow slides and up with metallic gold sandals like I did today. Find a dress or a romper that can be worn with any heel height to make it more versatile. Also, for a statement dress I prefer a looser fitting shape with volume to hide food babies after a dinner out. Look for a cute bracelet or earrings to tie the whole outfit together! You can also pair this look with a nude shoe or ballet flat!

I’ve found having go-to outfits pre-planned makes my life easier. If I get a last minute invite for a coffee date I’ll reach for the black tank and leggings. If my other half wants to meet up with friends in the evening - easy peasy - I’ll grab the dressy statement dress. If someone books a last minute consultation or just wants to schedule time to discuss business then the white dress is my go-to. Tip: Take pictures of your go -to outfits and keep them saved on your phone. You can also create a secret board on Pinterest for reference from any device.

Fourth of July Style for the Pool

Fourth of July Style for the Pool (14).jpg

Fourth of July is a special holiday for my family. I’ve mentioned many times over the years here on Three Heel Clicks that I was brought up as a child of a Military Father. He service, dedicated, work ethic and sacrifice to protect the lives of us living here in what is considered as a safe, prosperous nation has been something my family was directly involved in. In my father’s garage, he has a poster that reads the following quote:

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
- George Orwell

The garage for me is one of my places I’ve gone to since I was a teenager to paint. I could turn what was then my boombox on and drown out all of the world to safely paint for hours upon hours. I still am drawn to sitting in that same room when I return to visit every time. As I was reading out there over the past weeks and spending time journaling, pouring over great works of leaders, and spending time working on my spiritual fitness I again was reminded about my father’s service to our country.

America has political unrest, policy reform, socioeconomic conflicts and crime but for the majority of my life I knew I could lay my head on my pillow without hearing the sounds of bombs, terrorists and fear of my life. I think that’s a freedom taken for granted in our country. So before I give you a few poolside style tips, I am taking a moment to thank the brave souls that fight for our country. I wish war was not a necessity in our world today but I thank God every night I can pray in public, have access to food and medical care (even if it’s expensive) and the freedom to vote.

If you have a chance to thank someone in your life tomorrow for trying to make our world a better place to live in and our country an environment who doesn’t not have daily mass destruction, war on our own soil from military raids. It doesn’t need to be military personnel but our politicians fighting for world policy or advocates to aid other countries and create better relationships with opposing governments to ensure our country remains safe. Just think, if everyone living here in America to a few minutes to thank one other person on our biggest day of celebration of Independence that’s one way we can influence to make this country a better place. Now on to a little style inspiration for our celebrations tomorrow!

I recently put this outfit together (which you can find about a month ago on my Instagram feed) to inspire you a poolside or beachside outfit you can easily transition for an afternoon of BBQ’s, firework viewing and other festivities. I mentioned in my last post about Swimsuit Style different cover ups you can layer so you aren’t strutting half naked around the place when you aren’t in the pool or lounging on a chair. As I am approaching mid-thirties (Yeeek! Can’t believe it!) I find a one piece is my go to for an all day swimsuit. It doubles as a cute top when you throw a scarf, sarong, skirt or shorts over it. You can check out a few other looks below here by clicking through the pictures to find the original post:

Another tip is to add a pair of classic sunglasses, snazz up your look with a swipe of red lipstick and choose a patriotic palette without looking like an American flag. I love the combination of red, white and blue for it’s symbolism and complimentary, harmonious scheme. Add a nautical bag with rope details or a scarf to an otherwise neutral outfit in white or navy. Keeping a classy look is easy to assemble if you just take a few minutes and add a little color.

If you are spending time doing other activities you can add the same strategies above with dresses, rompers or other pieces you already own. Think about stripes, polka dots, or solid pieces for the day. You can also add gingham pieces for a little more fun! Click through the posts below to find more looks for inspiration for tomorrow!

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding (3).jpg

Cows and ducks are lining the pastures outside of the city here in Texas this time of year as the morning fog rolls through the grass. The birds chirp as the sunrises from my patio each day. The whole city is blooming in beautiful shades of yellow, pink, white, and purple flowers on the trees and in the bushes. Spring in Texas is full of picture perfect warm settings and scenery for photography, festivals and outdoor weddings. Although I love a good free party to attend, I have found that the next few months are full of weddings held outdoors and in barns. What’s in order to survive these celebrations? Well, it helps to come prepared to an outdoor wedding. Today we’ll talk a little more about what to wear to an outdoor wedding during Springtime and how to make the most of uneven terrain or unpredictable weather conditions.

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding (9).jpg

Start With a Forgiving Dress

This is the time to pick out a dress that allows you to sit comfortably. Usually outdoor weddings have a more casual countryside feel here in Texas so it’s perfectly appropriate to wear something that is floral, lightweight and with a looser skirt. The dress I’m wearing today can be found on my Amazon Shop Page for Spring Wedding Guest Attire. It’s such a great deal and I really love the way it fits. I actually wore this to a college friend’s wedding back in August and it’s proved to be one of those dresses that turns heads without revealing much. Opt for a knee length fit and flare dress, a tea length dress or go for a longer maxi in a beautiful printed fabric or soft pastel if you are looking for a more minimal look. Dress lines like Gal Meets Glam, JCrew, Eliza J, and LOFT are a few of my favorites for classic, feminine pieces.

Choose the Right Shoe

Two tips I have for any event you are attending outdoors - First, wear a heel you can walk in soft grass or over rocky gravel in the event you are in a more rural setting. There’s nothing worse than a cream colored satin heel sinking like quicksand into the ground as you make your way to your seat. Instead save the stilettos and pull out a wedge, espadrille, or a block heel like I’m wearing in this post today to give your legs more stability and you are less likely to trip or feel discomfort. My second tip is to bring a pair of chic flats. I’ll tell you, I’ve even ended up giving a pair to someone who was in the wedding party because they were in such pain after being on their feet in patent heels all day. I love flexible ballet flats or a chic embellished slides and either leave in the car or bring a bag big enough to house my heels if I choose into flats.

Bring a Purse Big Enough for Supplies

Maybe it’s because I grew up with a military father, but I like to make sure I’m prepared and a tiny purse won’t do for an outdoor wedding. From makeup or hair products for touch ups to carrying that extra pair of flats, I make sure I bring a medium size bag instead of a tiny clutch. If I know it’s going to get cooler in the evening I also stash a scarf I can drape over my shoulders for warmth as the sun goes down. I also recommend bringing a bottle of water, handkerchief and Advil in case it’s hot. You would be surprised how often I’ve been asked for Tylenol or Advil. (I personally rarely take either, but bringing along a few for others has rendered the title “boy scout” in my group of friends. Last but not least: waterproof band-aids. That’s a non-negotiable item.

A few other things to consider might be a clear chic bubble umbrella, a pair of retro sunglasses and that scarf I mentioned above. More than anything you want to be able to enjoy the celebration of the couple and less about your outfit being uncomfortable all evening.

Do you guys have upcoming weddings to attend? How many of them are outdoors?

Spring Essentials Every Girl Needs

Three Heel Clicks - Spring Essentials Every Girl Needs (8).jpg

Although it’s a whopping 48 degrees today, I’m still over here dreaming of warm sunshine filled days. We’ve had a few in the month of February and it’s got me itching for all things sunny. Well, we can at least start preparing for more Spring like days and today I’m giving you guys the low down on five essentials every girl needs this Spring.

Spring Essential 1: The Perfect Sun Hat

Not just pretty, but also practical a sun hat can do wonders during the bright months of Spring and Summer. They keep all of those unwanted wrinkles from developing due to sun rays and UV light on top of your sunscreen. While I opt for a wide brimmed boater as my go to for a sunny day, there are so many options to choose from here. Try a big floppy sun hat or if you prefer a panama hat.

Spring Essential 2: A block heel sandal

The particular shoe I’m wearing is from three years ago by LC Lauren Conrad. This line exclusively at Kohl’s has been a favorite of mine for years. There is so much quality and uniqueness of each piece she designs. I am amazed this pair of shoes is still in such good condition. There are still the version available and they are so incredibly comfortable! A block heeled sandal is great for those outdoor BBQ picnics, outdoor weddings (see this post for a few ideas on what to wear to a Spring wedding this year) and walking on uneven terrain. They can withstand dirt paths, gravel or grass. All a win in my book!

Spring Essential 3: A showstopping dress

Invest in at least one classic and perfectly fitted dress every season. when you are looking for one, flip it inside out and look at the craftsmanship. The best quality dresses have three things in common: fit, fabric and construction. You’ll notice on higher valued items they have additional lining a cheaply made dress doesn’t and the seams will be surged instead of pressed and bound. The better construction a dress has, the better the fabric falls and the fit is more tailored. Right now I can’t get enough of Alexis as a dress line. Although they run a little pricey you can find exceptional discounts during holiday sales and at the end of the season. I assure you their dresses do not disappoint.

Spring Essential 4: A packable bag suited for day trips and travels

This foldable and easy to pack bag is my new favorite! It’s one of those items I’ve had an eye on for about a year and decided this was the season for the classic pliage Longchamp purse. It folds up so neatly for travel. You can carry it as a tote or pack it in a smaller bag for shopping later. It’s also made out of a durable nylon and easy to clean. I love blue so naturally I gravitated to this beautiful cornflower blue color but there are so many options for more neutral shades if that’s your thing!

Three Heel Clicks - Spring Essentials Every Girl Needs (5).jpg

Spring Essential 5: New pair of shades

Sunglasses are a staple for Texas living peeps. You just have to have a pair to withstand endless 14 hour sunny days. I love this retro inspired pair with white details (on sale for under $50!). Try switching up your usual style and opt for a pair of white rimmed or tortoise shell sunnies. You can also look at other shapes and swap out your aviators for a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. Have fun with them and protect your eyes at the same time!
