With the changing of the seasons I always reach for a new bag or two to freshen up my wardrobe. I’ll be honest, although I have many pairs of shoes I’m not one to spend more than $100 on a pair. I have a similar motto with bags. I usually stick to $500 or below and oftentimes more in the $150-250 price range. I am messy. If I buy a new bag coffee or makeup will eventually make their way into the bottom. With that being said I am not a fan of investing into high end luxury brands since I put a lot of wear and tear on items. I’d rather spend in the mid-range so I still get quality but can enjoy wearing a purse instead of worrying I’ll tear or stain it.

Recently, I received this beautiful patchwork leather bag (it’s on sale here for under $160!) as a gift from my other half. I usually stick to buying bags in solids but this one worked perfectly with all of the navy and denim items I own. Today I pair it with skinny jeans and a navy blouse for an adorable date night look. This also works for a happy hour or night out with the girls. I added my favorite pair of block heel sandals back in stock and on sale for $40!

I also really like how this particular bag turns into a clutch by removing the cross body strap. It’s the perfect size for a night out and can store keys, phone, small wallet, compact, mascara and lipstick. I wrote recently about Two Spring Accessories You Need Now and included a round up of straw bags. Straw bags are another Spring handbag staple.

I wore this to dinner when we were in Birmingham, Alabama last weekend. We went to a delicious restaurant that you can watch on my stories under “Birimingham” on Instagram called Perfect Note. It’s a live jazz and blues club, cocktail bar, and really delicious Southern inspired food. They are centrally located in the city by the Galleria Mall and are locally owned. The music was fantastic! The food was so delicious! Finally, the owners couldn’t have been more hospitable or kind. I highly recommend visiting them!

What are some places you’ve found in the Birmingham area? Or your current home town?

Spring Essentials Every Girl Needs

Although it’s a whopping 48 degrees today, I’m still over here dreaming of warm sunshine filled days. We’ve had a few in the month of February and it’s got me itching for all things sunny. Well, we can at least start preparing for more Spring like days and today I’m giving you guys the low down on five essentials every girl needs this Spring.

Spring Essential 1: The Perfect Sun Hat

Not just pretty, but also practical a sun hat can do wonders during the bright months of Spring and Summer. They keep all of those unwanted wrinkles from developing due to sun rays and UV light on top of your sunscreen. While I opt for a wide brimmed boater as my go to for a sunny day, there are so many options to choose from here. Try a big floppy sun hat or if you prefer a panama hat.

Spring Essential 2: A block heel sandal

The particular shoe I’m wearing is from three years ago by LC Lauren Conrad. This line exclusively at Kohl’s has been a favorite of mine for years. There is so much quality and uniqueness of each piece she designs. I am amazed this pair of shoes is still in such good condition. There are still the version available and they are so incredibly comfortable! A block heeled sandal is great for those outdoor BBQ picnics, outdoor weddings (see this post for a few ideas on what to wear to a Spring wedding this year) and walking on uneven terrain. They can withstand dirt paths, gravel or grass. All a win in my book!

Spring Essential 3: A showstopping dress

Invest in at least one classic and perfectly fitted dress every season. when you are looking for one, flip it inside out and look at the craftsmanship. The best quality dresses have three things in common: fit, fabric and construction. You’ll notice on higher valued items they have additional lining a cheaply made dress doesn’t and the seams will be surged instead of pressed and bound. The better construction a dress has, the better the fabric falls and the fit is more tailored. Right now I can’t get enough of Alexis as a dress line. Although they run a little pricey you can find exceptional discounts during holiday sales and at the end of the season. I assure you their dresses do not disappoint.

Spring Essential 4: A packable bag suited for day trips and travels

This foldable and easy to pack bag is my new favorite! It’s one of those items I’ve had an eye on for about a year and decided this was the season for the classic pliage Longchamp purse. It folds up so neatly for travel. You can carry it as a tote or pack it in a smaller bag for shopping later. It’s also made out of a durable nylon and easy to clean. I love blue so naturally I gravitated to this beautiful cornflower blue color but there are so many options for more neutral shades if that’s your thing!

Spring Essential 5: New pair of shades

Sunglasses are a staple for Texas living peeps. You just have to have a pair to withstand endless 14 hour sunny days. I love this retro inspired pair with white details (on sale for under $50!). Try switching up your usual style and opt for a pair of white rimmed or tortoise shell sunnies. You can also look at other shapes and swap out your aviators for a pair of cat-eye sunglasses. Have fun with them and protect your eyes at the same time!

Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Speaking Their Love Language

Holiday, Houston, Lifestyle, Style, FashionCrystal JacksonComment
Three Heel Clicks - Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Speaking Their Love Language (15).jpg

With Valentine’s Day being tomorrow and many couples celebrating over the weekend it’s never too last minute to plan a fuss free activity or pick up a small meaningful gift. Gift giving is one of my love languages and for those who are not gift givers it can be challenging to find the right gift for a loved one. The thing is, most people who love gifts (whether receiving or giving) do not necessarily need something over the top or expensive. Instead, they are looking for something that matches their personality and has meaning.

Three Heel Clicks - Last Minute Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Speaking Their Love Language (16).jpg

I remember being introduced to the book The Five Love Languages and the person who introduced it also shared the same love language. She was practical and loved gifts that made her life easier. She told me her husband bought her a new vacuum and it made her life so much easier. Now, to some this seems like a gift without meaning. But to her, it was heaven! She was able to make her daily housekeeping easier and that was everything to her! She was a practical woman who loved to simplify her life and an unexpected vacuum was the perfect gift for her.

If you haven’t read The Five Love Languages it’s a expert recommended book for all couples. Basically, it states we all have a love bank and different people have different ways of receiving and giving love. The five love languages include: Physical Touch, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, and Gift Giving. Today I’m going to break down different ways you can show your love for anyone in your life by speaking their love language and gifts appropriate for each:

Physical Touch

Those who love physical touch crave to affection. You can usually spot this love language if they are huggers. For those who are like myself (more of a touch-me-not) huggers can feel like your space is being invaded. As I’ve grown older I’ve made it a point to greet people who I’ve noted as a hugger with a hug upon seeing them. In relationships, physical touchers enjoy cuddling, massages, kissing and in general just like being physically next to you. Try getting a bottle of massage oil (pick up this one at a local drug store) and plan an evening of candlelit romance. Another fun idea is to this amazing bean bag chair designed for couples!

Quality Time

People who speak the Quality Time language want to not only spend time with you, but they want to bond with you. Simply being in the room next to them is not enough. They are looking for you to interact, have conversation and develop together. If you aren’t sure where to begin on this one, start out with planning an activity together like going to an Escape Room or workout class. You can also buy a book like this one where the two of you fill it out together. Try a cooking class or even plan to cook a meal together. This is a perfect cutting board where you can personalize it for the two of you! Another fun gift if you’re cooking together includes his/her aprons. Think about gifting a small memento to add to an experience so your partner will be able to think of your time together when looking at your gift.

Words of Affirmation

Outside of gifts, this is my most dominate love language. Being a words of affirmation person I am not looking for validation but more so knowing where I stand with someone. Words of affirmation people don’t care for just a compliment, but understanding the meaning behind a given compliment. When I started thinking about ways someone could give words of affirmation immediately I was drawn to magnetic letters on a refrigerator for random messages or this message board! Another option is to write a love letter for them about the things that you love about them and get it framed. Don’t worry if you don’t have good penmanship you can print it out on pretty stationary and then pop it into a frame. Surprise your partner by sitting it out in the morning or when they come home in a place they will see it everyday as a reminder of your affection. The important thing to remember is to have the words in your tone. Don’t just go out and buy something pre-made like a card. Take times and write out things in your words and let your partner know just how important this person means to you.

Acts of Service

Acts of service is when you do something for another person to show how much you love them. Acts of service lovers will oftentimes take care of things for you like pick up dry cleaning, doing a household chore you dislike and building something for you. As I reflect upon this love language I think one of the sweetest things you can do for someone is to make them breakfast in bed or coffee. Try serving them on a pretty tray their favorite breakfast or buying a sweet coffee mug and making them a cup first thing in the morning. They are simple gestures, but mean so much. Another act of service idea is to make them dinner instead of taking them out or even clean the house up if that’s something needed.

Gift Giving

Gifts givers love to find things that evoke special memories. They also love personalized things so think about getting them a monogrammed gift. I love this decantur and low ball glass set and you can add this amazing little mongrammed mini bar set. This sweet little candle has a place for you to map out a special location and date for a sweet reminder of your anniversary or other special occasion. Another really fun idea is to get them something they will use in an activity they do every day but have it monogrammed like this yoga mat. I received one myself for Christmas and I love it so much!

Small Town Charm - Navasota, TX

Fashion, Style, Travel, PhotographyCrystal JacksonComment

Dress: Ilishop // Shoes: LC Lauren Conrad (they come in yellow!) // Purse: TravelNut // Sunnies: Elie Tahari

Navasota, TX is located about 20 miles from College Station and an hour away from Houston. It's a tiny town with old Texas charm and filled with historic buildings. It's one of those stops that's worth a few minutes just to stroll around their downtown. I've posted a few times before here and here using it as backgrounds for style posts, but today I thought I'd highlight a few places you can visit if you are looking for something "Spring-like" to do. If you want a few other small town recommendations you can check out the Small Town Charm page for unique stops found countryside.

First things first, I recommend staying at The Red Velvet Inn (see this post). It's a pet friendly bed and breakfast located less than 5 minutes from downtown. It's painted the brightest shade of red and has a lovely front porch with rocking chairs. If you are looking to grab a bite to eat, Erick's Mexican Restaurant is authentic Tex-Mex. Fajitas are a staple here in Texas and usually my go-to when ordering Mexican food. For coffee picks, try Classic Rock Company Coffee House or Java Hot Spot. One of the best places to eat is right off Highway 6 and is centered in a Garden. M Cafe has the yummiest sandwiches, salads, and a sunny little tea room with traditional teas served in the sweetest teapots. They also have a wicked array of desserts! They close early in the afternoon on the weekends, so make sure you go by before 4pm. You can read more about them here and here in previous posts.

Downtown is filled with several sites to see, these photographs were taken outside of the Historic Wood Factory, but downtown boasts of an old movie theater (still operating) and has several places to shop, eat and just perfect to walk around. Many of the buildings are painted different shades of pastel and it's great if you are looking for antiques. If you are visiting in late March/early April it's one of the best spots for sightseeing the famous Texas bluebonnet in beautiful fields of indigo blue. There's not much prettier than seeing a blanket of these blue babies.

I wore this yellow dress which has a sway to it when you walk. I liked it so much I ended up ordering one in white, too (which I plan on wearing to the Greek Festival in two weeks). The dress has a lovely wrapped waist and lightweight chiffon that blows in the wind. I paired it with light blue ballet flats and a blue vegan leather cross body purse. I've been really digging this midi length which is great for this time of year with warmer days and cooler nights. I found a few more sweet yellow dresses with similar fabric if you want to shop the post below.

Spring Scallop Dress

Fashion, StyleCrystal JacksonComment

Dress: MakeMeChic // Shoes: LC Lauren Conrad // Belt: Heirloom from Grandma // Purse: TravelNut (similar)

Scallops are everywhere right now and I love this sweet style. I picked up a few dresses earlier this season (see this post and this post on the Daily Dose feed). I also have a pair of scalloped ballet flats that I've worn on the blog numerous times (see here, here and here). I also really love this bag with scallop trim. I decided today to wear this white dress with a baby blue two toned print bag.

Light blue is one of the staple colors in my closet. It pairs really nicely with white, blush or yellow. I tend to stay on the pastel side of things or wear really bright colors like red or a daffodil yellow. If you are looking to establish a color palette in your closet, check out this Style Studio post for a few tips and tricks.

As far as neutrals are concerned, white is one of my favorites! I also like camel, navy and occasionally sprinkle black into the mix. Although whenever I wear black, I like to add a little color. When you have a go - to color palette is allows your wardrobe to mix and match easily. You almost don't have to even think about if something will go together. Oftentimes, I don't plan outfits out in advance (unless I'm traveling). My closet is already curated for things I love and tend to stick with white, yellow, blush, blues, hot pink and a few other neutrals.
