Recently I made a trip back to Birmingham, Alabama where my extended family is from. I go every few years to visit family there and this year was fun because the city was in full bloom. Birmingham was an overnight success back in the 19th century. It’s home to some of the best cooking (I have a weakness for fried green eggs) and so much industrial business. It’s filled with lush forests, white sand beaches and so many beautiful flowers during spring. Today’s post was photographed at my grandmother’s home in a little town right outside Birmingham. We’ve gone there since I was born and although the property no longer has my grandparents vegetable garden that I used to pick tomatoes from, it’s still filled with charm that leaves me with such a happiness.

I’ve worn this skirt in two previous posts and it’s one of my favorite Amazon finds! Lemon prints have been in the past few Spring seasons and being a nature lover I jumped on the bandwagon early. A knee length cotton skirt is so versatile. On rainy days you can pair it with a rain boots. For work you can add a button down shirt and ballet flats. Today I featured it with a simple black tank top, wicker basket bag, scarf and black ballet flats for a classic easy going Spring look.

If you are making your way out to the Birmingham area check out this post where I share an amazing jazz club! There are so many beautiful sites around the city and you will find the culture is different than other parts of the South. People from Alabama are the kind to sit on their front porch to watch thunderstorms roll in, make homemade deep fried dishes and sweet tea seems like it’s on tap at all times. Grab a cold glass and kick your feet up while you enjoy a slower pace of life!

Modern Looks for Easter Sunday Outfits

Three Heel Clicks - Modern Looks for Easter Sunday Outfits (4).jpg

In case you’re like me and feel like this year has already been a roller coaster and time has absolutely no meaning anymore here’s a PSA: Easter Sunday is in two weeks! Did you know Easter Sunday is the most popular day out of the entire year for people to go to church? I don’t touch as often on spirituality simply because I feel that we are all entitled to believing what reasonates within us, but since so many of us do attend church on holidays (and throughout the year) I thought I’d share a little more about Easter on the blog today.

Growing up, outside of the Resurrection (yes, I’m a Christian and Easter is the celebration of Jesus shedding his life for us) Easter Sunday meant something special for me - I got a brand new dress every year for it. Although my parents provided my sister and I with plenty growing up we were always confined to a strict budget. How else were my parents going to support two little kids and my brother who was in High School on a military salary? We ate generic everything and went shopping for school, things that were needed, and special occasions. One of those occasions I could count on a new outfit (including shoes) was Easter. Every year we would go pick out our new dresses, hats, gloves, lace embellished socks and patent white shoes. One year Mom let us help pick out our own fabric and dress patterns and she slaved away for a month to make sure we had new ones picked out in time!

As I fast forward to today, I carried the same tradition on to my own daughter. We love getting to pick out a pretty pastel dresses and in true Southern Style I finally feel comfortable wearing white now that it’s Easter weekend. This year I’m opting for something a little more streamline than my child hood days and this Everlane dress is perfect for Easter celebrations. If you aren’t into embellishments, patterns or over the top frills then this is such a good buy for Spring! I’ve rounded up my favorite streamlined dresses with modern silhouettes and all are budget friendly!

Whenever I think of Easter I also think about hats! Easter Sunday along with the Kentucky Derby are two occasions where you will receive minimal criticism for wearing a hat with a giant bow! I love this one from San Diego Hat Company. They are my go to brand for quality hats and at a price point under $50. Then, I added a pair of yellow drop earrings you can shop on my Amazon Easter Sunday Round Up page and a vintage wicker basket. Speaking of basket bags, Alice from Lone Star Looking Glass shared the cutest wicker bags from Patricia Nash. They are so similar to what I’m wearing in this post. Also, Alice is such a Southern inspiration for me! I’ve followed her for a few years now and love her Southern take on Texas style. Add a sweet little printed scarf for a colorful touch!

Last but not least, make sure you grab a pair of new shoes! If you are looking for a pair of block heels I posted a few days ago What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding. All of the posts are outdoor friendly and perfect to wear all season long for any occasions from dinner out to a more formal occasion like a wedding or holiday.

What are you planning on wearing for Easter? Do you celebrate?

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding (3).jpg

Cows and ducks are lining the pastures outside of the city here in Texas this time of year as the morning fog rolls through the grass. The birds chirp as the sunrises from my patio each day. The whole city is blooming in beautiful shades of yellow, pink, white, and purple flowers on the trees and in the bushes. Spring in Texas is full of picture perfect warm settings and scenery for photography, festivals and outdoor weddings. Although I love a good free party to attend, I have found that the next few months are full of weddings held outdoors and in barns. What’s in order to survive these celebrations? Well, it helps to come prepared to an outdoor wedding. Today we’ll talk a little more about what to wear to an outdoor wedding during Springtime and how to make the most of uneven terrain or unpredictable weather conditions.

What to Wear to an Outdoor Spring Wedding (9).jpg

Start With a Forgiving Dress

This is the time to pick out a dress that allows you to sit comfortably. Usually outdoor weddings have a more casual countryside feel here in Texas so it’s perfectly appropriate to wear something that is floral, lightweight and with a looser skirt. The dress I’m wearing today can be found on my Amazon Shop Page for Spring Wedding Guest Attire. It’s such a great deal and I really love the way it fits. I actually wore this to a college friend’s wedding back in August and it’s proved to be one of those dresses that turns heads without revealing much. Opt for a knee length fit and flare dress, a tea length dress or go for a longer maxi in a beautiful printed fabric or soft pastel if you are looking for a more minimal look. Dress lines like Gal Meets Glam, JCrew, Eliza J, and LOFT are a few of my favorites for classic, feminine pieces.

Choose the Right Shoe

Two tips I have for any event you are attending outdoors - First, wear a heel you can walk in soft grass or over rocky gravel in the event you are in a more rural setting. There’s nothing worse than a cream colored satin heel sinking like quicksand into the ground as you make your way to your seat. Instead save the stilettos and pull out a wedge, espadrille, or a block heel like I’m wearing in this post today to give your legs more stability and you are less likely to trip or feel discomfort. My second tip is to bring a pair of chic flats. I’ll tell you, I’ve even ended up giving a pair to someone who was in the wedding party because they were in such pain after being on their feet in patent heels all day. I love flexible ballet flats or a chic embellished slides and either leave in the car or bring a bag big enough to house my heels if I choose into flats.

Bring a Purse Big Enough for Supplies

Maybe it’s because I grew up with a military father, but I like to make sure I’m prepared and a tiny purse won’t do for an outdoor wedding. From makeup or hair products for touch ups to carrying that extra pair of flats, I make sure I bring a medium size bag instead of a tiny clutch. If I know it’s going to get cooler in the evening I also stash a scarf I can drape over my shoulders for warmth as the sun goes down. I also recommend bringing a bottle of water, handkerchief and Advil in case it’s hot. You would be surprised how often I’ve been asked for Tylenol or Advil. (I personally rarely take either, but bringing along a few for others has rendered the title “boy scout” in my group of friends. Last but not least: waterproof band-aids. That’s a non-negotiable item.

A few other things to consider might be a clear chic bubble umbrella, a pair of retro sunglasses and that scarf I mentioned above. More than anything you want to be able to enjoy the celebration of the couple and less about your outfit being uncomfortable all evening.

Do you guys have upcoming weddings to attend? How many of them are outdoors?

Two Spring Accessories You Need Now

Spring is a fun time of the year with blooms opening and weather warming up. Accessories are a big part of making an outfit unique and I’m here to share some of the biggest trends this season you don’t want to miss out on. Any outfit can be instantly elevated with items like hats, scarves and shoes. Although I try to limit the number of accessories and choose a statement piece so I don’t end up looking like I’m wearing a costume. This is especially important for petite gals. Loading up hats, jewelry, and crazy embellished clothing items isn’t the best way to go. Instead, pick one or two to add to a spring dress or basic neutral outfit for a twist on old favorites.

Shop the Look:

A Silk Floral Scarf

A scarf is probably the most versatile item you can own. You can tie it in your hair, on your bag or around your neck. It’s so chic and simple! I really love the look of a pastel floral print. I oftentimes pick these up in vintage or thrift stores but there are a variety of options online like this one, this one and this one under $60. If you are looking for an investment piece check out this one or this one.

Rattan or Woven Bag

This time of year basket and woven bags make an appearance! It’s finally time to shed those heavy structured leather goodies used all winter long and swap for a fresh spring like material instead. Another great find at vintage stores, flea markets and thrift stores! If you don’t have time to scour your local markets check out this one and this one that easily ships to your front door! I love tying a scarf around the handles for an extra special touch!

The Perfect Yellow Wrap Skirt for Spring

Three Heel Clicks - The Perfect Yellow Wrap Skirt for Spring (6).jpg

Yellow is one of the happiest colors you can wear and starts showing up in nature about this time of year. From bright daffodils to sunny shades of marigold this color literally starts popping up everywhere as snow fades and spring blooms open. Yellow is a staple color in my wardrobe just like blush and navy. I probably wear it more often than any other color during the warmer months of the year. Whenever I’m searching for an outfit to elevate my mood, yellow is where I turn to achieve that experience.

You may recognize this skirt from Instagram last week when I wore it in blush. It’s under $30 so of course I bought it in two colors. When you find something you love, get it in multiples. You will not regret that choice. The skirt has so much drama and flair and love how you can dress it up or dress it down. I wore it with a tank top when I was at the beach, but switched to a button down and white booties when we arrived in Sacramento. It’s a little cooler here than in the South so I could get away with a pop of white booties.

Also right now, you will find tortoise shell accessories are all the rage. I’m loving how neutrals are in right now. I’m wearing tortoise earrings here along with a leather watchband for my apple watch and a vintage leather Coach purse. It never hurts to have a few neutral accessories on hand to go with brighter colors like yellow. I personally think yellow pairs beautifully with warm shades of tans, camels and browns for Spring.
