Spring Neutral Outfit Using Items You Already Own

How To, Fashion, StyleCrystal JacksonComment

So much is happening around here lately. I mentioned in Instagram stories that I am headed out of town at the end of this week to where my extended family lives in Birmingham, Alabama. It’s the first time in three years I’ll be back and I’m excited to see my only living grandmother! Fun fact: I’m adopted and for the first year and a half of my life my biological grandmother cared for me! We are pretty close and always have been so I’m looking forward to seeing her this coming weekend. Anyhow, I am prepping for that trip and tomorrow will be sharing with you my entire outfit selection and packing listing in a new series called Capsule Suitcase! Capsule Suitcase will help you plan your next getaway and I’ll show you exactly what I’m bringing in a visual way!

Spring Neutral Outfit Using Items You Already Own (6).jpg

Last week it really warmed up for a few days hitting almost 80 degrees! I was excited to pull out all of the sleeveless dresses I own like this vintage stripe one I recently found. Three Heel Clicks was founded on the basis of sharing style in everyday life. Some of that style might be inspiration for your home, some for destinations around the US and other times I’ll share style inspiration using items you may already own. Today’s post is exactly that! This look was created with five basic elements: a striped dress, tortoise earrings, ballet flats, a braided belt and straw bag. You may not own all five pieces, but you probably have a few of them floating somewhere in your closet.

Stripe Dresses Under $100

One of the most universally flattering silouettes is a fit and flare dress. It draws attention to your waist giving you a classic, hourglass shape. If you already own a striped dress that fits amazing, feel free to bust that out now. If you are in the market for one, I suggest finding something that fits your torso and the flares out at the waist. Look for a dress that’s not too short and one with wider straps allows you to wear a regular bra instead of a strapless one. Here are a few that would be really flattering. I chose to wear a neutral color combination of black and white with accents of a walnut brown but you can easily swap this for pale blue and white dresses or really any color.

Next up you want to add a few accessories. I love the look of a belt to break up a dress like this and help cinch the waist. A classic leather braided belt is something I reach for time and time again. You can instantly give a dress a better shape by adding a belt. What I works great in this look is that the belt mixes and matches to create a look that is different than what you would buy right off the shelf. You can shop all of my straw bag picks and statement earrings under a $100 below.

Last but not least add a pair of ballet flats and statement earrings. Earrings are probably the most frequently worn jewelry item. I don’t like to spend a fortune on them since so often I lose one. However, I do wear them frequently to give the outfit a little special touch. Tortoise shell is in season this year and I couldn’t be happier about that! It’s a perfect neutral print that works with so much you probably already own. After you add earrings reach for your favorite neutral flats. I wore these tan ones that I’ve raved about for over a year now (and I’m on my second pair because I wore the first ones down to a pathetic state). You could easily do black, white, brown, or tan. Just stick to your color scheme and it will all come together. If you’re on the petite side look for a pair that is similar to your skin tone to elongate the leg. It’s such an easy to trick to lengthen the body. Most people are extremely surprised to find that in real life I am only 5’0. Yep, so I know a thing or two about making a short frame look longer.

Three Heel Clicks - Five Ways to Wear a Spring Garden Hat (11).jpg

Now that Spring is almost here it’s time to bust out all of those straw hats made for basking in the sun! I love hats. Why? Because they add so much drama to an outfit. I’ve mentioned in the past and I’ll stick to my guns on this one but they are perfect if you aren’t a big jewelry person. You’ll find me reaching constantly for a hat instead of earrings. Check out more looks with hats here on the blog! Today I’ve rounded up five looks with a black brimmed bow embellished garden hat. You can bring along a hat for casual brunch or an afternoon date at the park. Also, keeps you from worrying about your hair and blinded by the sun.

Wear with a sundress and classic black and white accessories

Experiment with wearing classic cap toe pumps with a sweet little cotton sundress. You can add a coordinating two toned bag to keep the dress looking classic. Take this look to the office by adding a little blazer or a cardigan, too.

Mary jane flats and a gingham dress is perfect for a day at a BBQ

This is actually something I’d wear to an outdoor event right now like a BBQ or outdoor concert. The relaxed fit of the dress makes it easy to move in and the print is really casual. It’s also nice for those cool Spring nights having longer sleeves. Add a pair of mary janes for easy walking on patios, lawns and grassy concert knolls.

Dressing a lace dress down with lace up shoes

This look is an ideal one for a baby shower, brunch or sunday church. The lace and tulle combination is so feminine but dressed down with the hat and flat shoes.

Add heels and a midi length halter for a hot date

Grab a pair of lace up strappy sandals and bow embellished purse to a bright and bold red dress. Red immediately screams hot and perfect for a date night!

Pretty prints and neutral flats

Wear a simple black and white printed dress with nude flats for a stroll around the park, a day at a garden or to go wine tasting. Don’t be afraid to wear a straw hat with a pretty print like this small paisley or grab a floral dress.

A Word to all the Single Ladies on Valentine's Day

Three Heel Clicks -- A Word to all the Single Ladies on Valentine's Day (12).jpg

Being single on Valentine’s Day can feel lonely... whether you’ve been single for a few days, weeks, months or years it’s easy to get a little down on this so called “Hallmark” holiday. If you are currently single it may feel depressing to go to work and see others receiving gifts. You may wander through a grocery store and find the overwhelming amount of cheezy decor, flowers and chocolate on display ammunition for feeling even worse.

I’ve been there a few times myself in various forms from just dating someone to the aftermath of destruction from a serious relationship breaking and I’m here to tell you that Valentine’s Day single can downright just suck…. The good news is, it doesn’t have to. You can take control today to make it a holiday about love…self love instead.

Get Dressed to the Nines

There is something about putting on a good outfit that fits and flatters you that makes you instantly feel like you are a superstar. Today is NOT the day to wear an old worn t-shirt and sweatpants. I repeat, no sweatpants. Put on your favorite outfit, do your makeup and hair and leave the house to go to work feeling your best. You don’t have to go out in head to toe pink or red but instead wear what you feel like you look the best in.

Plan Your Evening

Create plans for your evening whether it’s a coffee date with a friend, a Galentine’s Day gathering or to go home and read a book. Make plans for yourself. I would recommend not having dinner alone though. It can be awkward having dinner on a date night stuck watching couples walk by smothering each other with affection (can we say gag me?!) If you choose an evening at home schedule to have dinner delivered or order take out from your favorite restaurant and DO NOT forget dessert. Count your calories tomorrow. Today is about self love and building your confidence so you can love others better. Indulge a little for yourself and appreciate each bite.

Silence Your Phone and Stay Off Social Media

Whether you’re single or not, alone or with someone just turn your phone to silence or even off tonight. It’s been proven that scrolling endlessly through picture perfect social media accounts can bring your mood down. Instead fill your time with something that creates value in your life. Go on a walk in a beautiful area of your city or get a workout in. Grab a book or rent a movie you’ve wanted to see a while. The key is to minimize an opportunity to compare your single life to all of the perfect couples out there.

Don’t Get Drunk

While many of us love a good glass of wine today is not the day to pound shots of tequila or whiskey. I’d go even further to say you may not want to drink at all. Alcohol walks a fine line for being emotional. Since it also lowers inhibitions you may find yourself dialing exes in a desperate attempt to reconcile. Again, not the time nor date for these antics. You’ll only feel worse the following morning both physically and emotionally. Instead, relax with yoga, mediation or a long bath. Have a mocktail like ginger beer or if you want wine there are dealcoholized versions that give you a great flavor and food pairing without the effects. Stay in control of yourself so you can hold your head up high throughout the evening and into the next day.

Most of all remember you are worth more than today. You are loved and cared for by someone beyond what’s here on Earth. You are an amazing person and it’s okay to be alone. So oftentimes it feels like when we are at a low point in life it’s like being in a valley where you can’t see hope for the future. When we are at high points in our life it’s easy to count our blessings and view life in rose colored glasses. No matter what season your life holds, today is still a gift. Seasons in life are temporary and one day things will be different. I hope each and every one of you have a wonderful evening and cherish today.

What are ways you show self-love?

DIY: Bow Headband

DIY, How To, StyleCrystal JacksonComment

Simplest DIY project ever. I used a ribbon and a basic black headband. I simply tied a bow around it and headed out the door. I don't feel like I even need to post pictures, because the instructions are that easy. I think in life I tend to over complicate things and it's just not necessary. Simple color schemes, simple accessories make things easier sometimes.

I love to wear my Ted Baker shopper. I've probably worn it more times on this blog than any other single item, but it's one of my favorite things I own. I have it in 3 colors and plan to keep adding. It's doubled as a shopper, gym bag, laptop bag and purse. Find a roomy bag and get it in multiples. You'll thank yourself later.

If you are looking for a delicious cup of coffee on the north side of town - I recommend Plum Coffee. They have tasty gingerbread chai lattes and make a mean cappuccino. I stop there almost every weekend and have some of the best espresso around. They are located on Barker Cypress Road and make for a nice spot to read a book or simply get some work done. Be aware, they close early - they are more of a daytime place.

Valentine's Day is almost here. Have you made plans yet? Check out this post, this post and this post for outfit inspiration and this one for cute ideas of things to do. I also did a couple of makeup/beauty posts here and here for some glamorous looks.

No. 3: Fast Forward Friday

IMAG1038_2.jpg

This is a great example of one of my favorite items I've ever done as a DIY project. I used a pattern for this particular skirt, but A Pair and a Spare has such a great tutorial here that I made for a shorter version. I full circle skirt is such a classic looking piece for anyone's wardrobe. I made this one out of broadcloth, so it's lightweight and cotton for warmer months - but can be worn with tights int he cooler months.

When I first showcased this shirt last Fall, I knew immediately it would be a perfect addition long-term in my closet. I have worn it probably fifteen different ways over the past year to include with a sequin skirt, red midi skirt and here over the summer with a pair of black shorts. It's one item I HIGHLY recommend picking up. You'd be surprised how easy it is to just throw over jeans or even cut offs. You can tie it at the waist or wear it open like I did with a swimsuit.

I wanted to show you a masculine vs. feminine approach to making item have a completely different feel. In the previous post here - I wore the button up with a pair of black leggings, over the knee boots, and a classic black hat for a masculine sort of look. Fast forward to this season and it's been all about feminine details for me. I've been loading up on bows, ballet flats and pastels for some reason. I wore my favorite bow cross body with black and white detailing. I bought this bag a few seasons back and it's really been versatile.
