Swimming at the Lake

Fashion, Lifestyle, Style, Travel, Petite StyleCrystal JacksonComment

Been spending ample time getting as close to Mother Nature as possible lately. Yesterday I took advantage of the beautiful sunshine after almost a week of cloudy skies and rain by stepping out on the lake for a swim! My daughter and I packed up a picnic and walked from our cabin down to the lake to get much needed swim time!

I’ve been really into wearing a more modest swimsuit this past summer despite the fact that I’ve worked on toning more than ever in my thirties. I think as we get older it’s perfectly okay to wear a flattering sexy swimsuit but I also think it’s just as impactful to be a little more covered. When I’m out playing with the kiddo I’m not trying to constantly adjust every few minutes to ensure I am not showing something I shouldn’t be. No, I’d rather be able to swim comfortably and play!

Don’t forget to protect your skin with SPF Veil!

As the summer winds down don’t be afraid to buy half a swimsuit if you find one in your size! Although my top and bottoms are part of two swimsuits I own I mixed and matched to create today’s retro inspired look! Instead of buying a matching set you can look for things on clearance in the same colors!

Since I’ve been staying at a lake in Northern California, I’ve made it a point to focus on overall health and connecting deeper to my surroundings. Slow drives through the mountains, walks at sunset and sunrise, stargazing at night and examining the beauty in nature are what most of my past few days have been like for me. Health is my number one priority and I’m not just talking about diet and exercise. Now more than ever I am putting my mental, spiritual and physical health at the top of my priority list.

With that being said I’ve been paying close attention to making sure I’m getting enough exercise, eating whole fruits and vegetables, hydrating my skin and protecting it from the sun. The air in Northern California is so clean compared to Houston and the UV rays sear right through it. Not only do I use an SPF veil broad spectrum beauty fluid (you can read more about that product in last week’s post) but I also hydrate with our YOU•OLOGY Day Moisturizer and my favorite BB Cream.

I’ve been harping so much about skincare lately and it’s more important to me than ever before now that I’m closer to forty than twenty-one! The main key with skincare is to be as consistent as possible. Ensure you cleanse, tone, treat and moisturize daily to allow your skin cells to regenerate. Another BIG step I’ve added is regularly exfoliating. I love our YOU•OLOGY Brightening Mask because it treats the skin to a brighter appearance and lightly exfoliates.

Recently I earned a certification in our YOU•OLOGY skincare product line. If you are not sure where to start to improve your skincare regimen then I’m all ears! I shared a post on Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale where you can find tons of neutral pieces to rebuild your wardrobe for Fall. Fall is a great time to stock up on basics because of there are tons of sales from summer clearance and then tax free weekend! Don’t forget if you are in Texas it is tax-free weekend beginning on Friday, August 9th! You’ll save 8.25% from any sales tax on products like clothing and school supplies. It’s one of the biggest shopping events of the year and makes a difference the more money you spend.

Although Nordstrom is an all-time favorite, let’s be real sometimes you just need a few pieces that cost less than a bag of groceries. Wal-mart has really strived over the past few years to bring you competitive garments and styles at affordable prices. More and more times I run in for a grocery item I come out with a new outfit. They have tons of bold pieces and also some beautiful neutrals. Below is a round up of my favorite 30 neutral back-to-school pieces from Wal-mart!

Put Some Pep in Your Step This Morning!

Three Heel Clicks - Put Some Pep In Your Step This Morning! (1).jpg

There was a time when I hated Monday mornings. Heck, I hated all mornings. Now I no longer use an alarm and find I naturally wake when the sunlight pours into my bedroom window (or hotel room as it currently stands). I immediately rise excited to start my day, but it wasn’t always like that. There were years that went by where I felt like getting out of bed required me to army crawl to my coffee pot for energy. Although I sure do love a good cup of coffee, I’ve noticed since I made lifestyle changes over the past year I have so much more enthusiasm to get myself out of bed. I thought it would be motivating to share a few ways to put some pep into your step this morning!

Down a HUGE glass of water first thing

Hydration is key for energy, clear skin, and for our minds. By starting the day with a tall glass of water (at least 16oz) you’ll be immediately helping your mind and body kick off right! Hydration is so important in the mornings because you just spent hours sleeping which in turn means little fluids were put into your body. Put a tall glass beside your bed and down it first thing in the morning!

Play some of your favorite upbeat music

Forget the TV, radio and news this morning and control the message with some upbeat tunes to lay a positive foundation for the day. Because the news and radio are pretty unpredictable on content, you can choose a playlist of songs that would get you movin’ in the morning. Imagine getting your favorite song stuck in your head rather than some silly jingle on the radio. Control the message you hear and keep your mind in a positive place!

Wear a Favorite Outfit and Feel Your Best

When I worked in an office I usually came in dressed pretty nice on Monday’s. It was always nice because I usually had meetings with my teams or the executives. Being dressed up and prepared to attend a formal business meeting was something I frequently did. If you are staying at home today, pull out a comfy sundress or pair of athleisure joggers and matching top. Even your lounge wear can be stylish and luxurious. If your running errands or dealing with the kiddos, you can always opt for your favorite pair of shorts with a button down top or a cute matching athletic set. The key is to be intentional. Put on light makeup and fix your hair. You’d be surprised what 15 minutes of effort can do for your mood.

Okay now let’s get to shopping!

Back to School Bags

Every kid or young adult will need a sturdy, reliable bag for everyday. When I was in both High School and College I loved carrying a stylish tote or messenger back instead of a backpack. I still carry something similar for work. If you choose a classic but modern style it won't dissapopoint! You'll quickly find that beautiful leather wears well over time. For backpacks, check out padded straps and a good quality canvas or leather. The backpack selection is light years ahead of when I was going to class daily! Take advantage. Also, look for pockets for wallets and makeup!

Step Up Your Shoe Game

With school campuses getting larger everyday, having shoes that allow you to be on your feet all day are a necessity not a luxury. Opt for an old school style sneaker, low cut boot, ballet flats and stylish slide. If you have a colder climate make sure your snow or rain boots are in good condition.

Let's Talk Tees and Tops

For tops I like to have a few soft tees both short sleeve and long sleeved on hand. They can be layered under jackets, sweaters and blazers. They also are cute with a skort, skirt, jeans or shorts. James Pearse make some of the best or splurge on a commes de garcons. Check out stripes, solids and a few graphic ones.

Practical pants and bottoms

Since most schools have a dress code, I like to keep my bottoms more conservative. Defintely don't want to be sent home because of a few inches. If you are in a warm climate JCrew makes tons of great shorts. Make sure you stock up on a pair of quality jeans like these highly rated ones from Everlane. Also, I like a good mid length skirt and shorter corduroy option for a cute mod look.

Layering Pieces for Warmth

Lastly, it's time to round up a few pieces to keep you warm and dry. Never underestimate the power of the classic pea coat. My mom wore one in the 60s and I wore one in the early 00s when I was in school. I still have both a navy and tan ones. If this style is a little preppy, check out a suede or leather moto jacket, or a puffer for colder days. Also, make sure you have both thin and heavy sweaters. I like these from jcrew! Always classy, and in so many colors!

Here's a few outfits you can easily re-create whether you are going to school or not this year. Most of these I would wear as a momma or on casual activities.

Transform any outfit with a bold lip
